Avdat is a Nabatean Fortress (the people from Petra)
It's on the ancient trade route
the Nabateans did very lucrative business here
later it became Roman then Byzantine
we jump a little ahead in our story to the new testament
because of where this is located
we're on our way to Eilat
we sit in the shade (glorious shade) to listen
Where we are sitting is a Praetorium
Matthew 27:
Then the governor's soldiers took Jesus to the Praetorium
and gathered the whole company of soldiers
around him
They stripped him and put a scarlet robe on him
I asked Rien to stand on the Judge's seat
Matthew 27:
Meanwhile Jesus stood before the governor,
and the governor asked him,
"Are you the king of the Jews?"
"You have said so" Jesus replied...
...while Pilot was sitting on the Judge's seat...
we explored the place some more, there are churches
some places are Roman other Byzantine
the desert preserves buildings well
we checked out the winepress, it's huge
pictures are so helpful
you know better what you are looking at
looks like ruble to me
apparently Byzantine Quarter
Map from the whole site
time to take the bus down
to real washrooms (a treat on this trip)
supper at our hotel
we walked to the red sea
according to David "a stone's throw from the hotel"
well we got there 2 km later
and had to walk back the same route
